Action

When I entered the stage, centred on the stage was a chair, a table covered by a black rug and a few black ink pens on top. I sat down and placing my forearm on the mat, I began to draw with one of the pens, lines on the back of my forearm and the palm of my left hand, until they were completely covered in black.

The action was videotaped.

This action was presented within those programmed in: Occurrences. Some possible interpretations¹.

¹Occurrences. Some possible interpretations.
15 actions (occurrences) were programmed, all of them were performed live, facing the public, taking advantage of the opening hours of the theatre of the Casa de Cultura de Coria, from 11:30 to 23:00 on 23 November.
When the audience entered the hall, the stage was empty and illuminated, at the agreed time, the lights in the hall and on the stage faded to black, at which point the people in charge of introducing the necessary props began to work.
The curtain was closed and opened (just the right amount of time for the action to close and open) between all the «occurrences», during which time the props on stage were readjusted, always minimally.
The instructions for the actions were short, clear and concise. They were executed without rehearsal; all results were accepted. The unforeseen and the random were part of the works.
Before the performance of each piece, an actress (Eloísa Serrano) designated for this purpose, came on stage and read the note of the «occurrence» that was to be performed.
A team of 9 people (a municipal policeman, two actors, an actress, a volunteer from the audience, the person in charge of the theatre’s programming, the person in charge of the cultural centre, a camera operator and the artist) was needed for the interpretation of the witticisms. There were no specifications about the costumes they had to wear, they all wore their usual clothes, except for those who wore their professional uniforms.
The actions were documented on stage, photographically and on video.
All the actions were scheduled, and all their acts were carried out with previously established times, but without closing themselves off to the indeterminate.
It was foreseen that the occurrences would be broadcast live, by closed circuit video, so that the audience could properly appreciate what was happening on stage. Although an attempt was made during the performance, this was not possible due to technical problems.
In order for the audience to be able to see the objects that were produced in the course of some actions, they were repeatedly invited to come on stage.
The audience could enter and leave the theatre whenever they wished.
All those involved had lunch on stage at around 2.30 p.m., including one member of the audience and the person in charge of the theatre’s programme.
