“Ocurrencia” that arose during the reading of the Book: Naked appearance. The desire and the eye in the work of Marcel Duchamp and Jeff Koons, aún. Museo Jumex – Phaidon, 2019.

For the performance at NNNN, this was another of the “ocurrencias” read out to the audience as a homework assignment. Aicil offered to do it. After the workshop that day, I called him aside, and told him that I didn’t think that, being my son, he should interpret more than one witticism (he had already interpreted: Disappearing Elemente / Disappeared Element). He thought that what I said was right. But later on, on reflection, I thought that I had not acted with the required fairness towards Aicil. For if it had been someone else who had asked me to interpret more than one occurrence, I would have authorised him to do so without any hesitation. I then phoned him and let him know of my change of position and the reasoning behind it. It was not until Sunday morning that he had his interpretation ready. In the previous days he had raised some doubts with me, which I shunned as far as possible. I told him that it was up to him to make the decisions. That I had read him the score, and that, on the basis of what was said in it, he should do what he considered (the point is to avoid my taste, my ability, to introduce the unexpected). What he finally gave me, just before the opening of the exhibition, was a collage. According to what he told me, he had looked up the photos of bullet wounds on the internet, downloaded them, and taken them to a copy shop to have them printed on A4. Then he had written in pencil on A3 the word “Capitalism” in capital letters. He then filled them in by cutting out the photographs of bullet wounds, gluing them to the A3 with glue stick, and finally erasing the pencil strokes left by the collage. He also sent me three photographs of the process. The collage was displayed in the public area.
